Foundation Fieldbus vs. Profibus

The digital Foundation fieldbus (FF) and Profibus-based control systems have much in common. Both technologies can provide the following features:

Fully digital, serial, two-way, and multidrop communication.

Remote access to status and diagnostic information from smart field devices.

A method to communicate to field instruments over fieldbus.

Bus power and intrinsic safety features.

Faster verification and validation of control loop configurations.

However, for FF technology, which is a single communication protocol, field equipment (such as sensors, actuators, controllers, and I/O devices) is first interconnected with a single cable to form a segment known as an H1. Then various H1 subsystems and other devices such as high-speed controllers, data servers, and workstations are connected to form a high-speed Ethernet (HSE) network, which can run at 100 megabits per second. The FF H1, which is usually used for process control with limited discrete applications, is a deterministic network running at a speed of 31.25 kilobits per second (kbps). This communication speed is appropriate for the majority of process conditions in nuclear power plants, but it is not fast enough for some safety-critical discrete applications. The FF HSE can provide peer-to-peer communication capability.

The HSE technology is designed to support fault-tolerant networks and devices in safety-critical monitoring and control applications. All or part of the HSE network and devices can be made redundant to achieve the level of fault tolerance required for a particular application. Because FF devices can communicate with each other directly without having to go through a central computer, advanced control strategies that involve variables throughout the plant can be implemented without the risk of a central computer failure, thus further reducing risk. In addition, control and I/O functions can be distributed to field FF devices, which can further improve the operating safety and reliability of systems.

In contrast, Profibus is not a single-communication protocol; it has a family of protocols. The two main Profibus protocols are Profibus-DP and Profibus-PA. The digital Profibus-DP running at 500 kbps is a better candidate for discrete and safety-critical control, whereas Profibus-PA has a speed of 31.25 kbps (similar to that of the FF) and is more suited for process control. Unlike Profibus-DP, Profibus-PA can be fieldbus-powered. In Profibus-based control systems, the I/O functions are moved to the field instruments; however, no control functions are moved to the field instruments. All control in the Profibus system is still done by the central controller.

FF and Profibus technologies share many similar design features, but each technology has its own specific functions and limitations. In nuclear power plants, there are areas with different levels of automation and control system hierarchy that have different communication needs. It may be necessary to use a mix of different fieldbus technologies to take advantage of each individual digital fieldbus characteristic to achieve more benefits, higher reliability, and adequate safety.

The Automation Federation was set up by ISA to, among other things, be a cheerleader for the automation profession, and in lobbying the U.S. government on behalf of automation professionals, it's having some significant successes.

Recently, the federation produced a detailed description of what an automation professional's skill set needs to be for the U.S. Dept. of Labor, and on July 14, Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) wrote, "The topic of automation cuts across all levels of industry, rather than serving as a stand-alone technology, and particularly affects the fields of control systems' cybersecurity, industrial wireless sensors, systems interoperability and other basic automation technologies necessary for the success of industrial enterprises."

As part of the report language to accompany H.R. 2847 (Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Appropriations Act) when it was reported out of the Senate Appropriations Committee (the bill has already passed the House), Mikulski continued, "NIST is encouraged to consult and collaborate with independent experts in the field of automation to support the agency's efforts in working with industry to increase innovation, trade, security and jobs."

That's the good news. We're beginning to be recognized as a discipline. There are still attempts to get rid of the control systems engineer designation in the U.S., which doesn't exist in other nations. This is partly because automation is a multidisciplinary activity, not just an engineering discipline.

Know-it-Alls (Almost)

An automation professional's skill set is varied and large. As Mikulski wrote, automation cuts across all industry verticals, so not only are the technical skills required to understand how control systems function and are designed, but the domain skills in multiple verticals are also required, so we know how to use the control systems we install.

Control columnist Greg McMillan says no amount of advanced process control or fuzzy logic algorithms can compensate for a half-hour of physical loop lag time in a pH loop. This is a large body of knowledge. In fact, the late Vernon Trevathan, a Process Automation Hall of Fame inductee, who led the great Monsanto process engineering team, produced a book for ISA Press that was called A Guide to The Automation Body of Knowledge (2nd edition, ISA Press, 2006). A planned edition of the ABoK is projected to be twice as large.

ABoK was Trevathan's attempt to produce a one-volume overview of automation. There are 37 subject areas and an appendix (see sidebar). It shows how all-encompassing automation is in discrete, hybrid or continuous applications. The number of processes that can be operated in manual for any length of time, even in an emergency, is vanishingly small.

Further, we must also must possess interpersonal, project management, business understanding and project justification skills, besides our engineering and technical abilities.

Because engineering licensing requirements are different in every state and vary worldwide, ISA produced a certification for automation professionals with or without formal training. The skill set ISA described for certified automation professionals is at ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP) Classification System (www.isa.org/~/CAPClassificationSystemWEB.pdf).

Where Do You Go to Learn?

The bad news is that automation is an interdisciplinary subject that simply isn't taught in school. You can pick up some automation technician skills in maintenance training programs, such as the Multi-Skilled Maintenance Technician Program that ATS Inc. produced with junior colleges in Illinois and South Carolina (www.advancedtech.com/mstcp.aspx). Or, you can get some skills from union apprenticeship programs and training courses such as the IBEW's electrician apprentice program. A few companies provide on-the-job training, but only at the technician or basic operator level.

What you can't get is a full-scale college education in the disciplines that make up the profession of automation. There are reasons for this, and most of them center on how the discipline of engineering is taught in colleges.
For example, my own alma mater, the University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC) established its Baskin School of Engineering long after I graduated, and it's now considered one of the finest engineering departments in the University of California system. Yet, if you examine Baskin's course descriptions and syllabi, you'll look for a long time before you find courses in industrial automation. You can find courses in control theory, sensors for environmental control, nanotechnology, and game system design, but few appropriate for working in automation. There is a degree offered by UCSC in mechatronics, but it's offered by the Theater Arts department. Go figure.

It seems the automation practicum just isn't academic enough for most engineering departments. Process Automation Hall of Fame inductee Russ Rhinehart from Oklahoma State University had his control systems program cut last year. Fellow inductee Dale Seborg from the University of California at Santa Barbara is highly unusual in that he insists that his graduate chemical engineering students learn practical automation. "Throughout my career," Seborg says, "a key research objective has been to help bridge the acclaimed gap between control theory and industrial practice. In particular, I require my Ph.D students to do some experimental work as part of their Ph.D program." That used to be okay.

In the past, companies would hire operators, engineers and technicians and spend one to two years training them. Even with the coming knowledge drought, companies are refusing to spend to bridge Seborg's gap. As a result, many people seek out training courses offered by ISA, vendors and others, such as IDC Technologies and the OPC Training Institute. Most firms won't pay for it, so you have to look at it as funding your continuing education.

I've described the automation profession as being similar to Ginger Rodgers, the famed 20th-century dancer and actress. She did everything Fred Astaire did, but she did it backwards and in high heels. We are dancing, and we are dancing faster. We are critical to the economic recovery, and we'll find out that managements are beginning to notice automation and automation professionals' effect on growth, sustainability and profits.

Đoạn thực chất là một cuộc "phỏng vấn" nho nhỏ, do một khách du lịch người Mỹ có tên Dixon Robert thực hiện sau khi quá đỗi ấn tượng trước khả năng nói tiếng Anh cực thạo của ông già bán postcard.

Thân thiện và cởi mở, ông cụ hồn nhiên tiếp chuyện bác khách Mỹ bằng phong thái "pờ rồ" mà nhiều bạn trẻ có khi… xách dép cũng không kịp.

Cụ kể, cách đây 25 năm cụ được một người bạn Mỹ tặng cho cái tên Bill ("khuyến mãi" cả phát âm B-I-L-L một cách chuyên nghiệp) để dễ bề "giao dịch" với khách nước ngoài. Hồi đó bị chê nói tiếng Anh dở quá, cụ quyết tâm bồi dưỡng cật lực bằng cách học tiếng bồi của khách du lịch, cộng thêm việc "luyện" phim Mỹ mỗi ngày.

Hiện với nghề bán bưu thiếp, cụ không chỉ nuôi sống bản thân mà còn cáng đáng thêm cả một cô con gái bị tật nguyền.

Cuối đoạn băng, cụ già Sài Gòn muốn gửi đến tất cả mọi người một thông điệp đầy ý nghĩa: "The best and the most beautiful thing in the world can not be seen nor touched but only can felt in the heart" (Điều tốt đẹp nhất trên thế giới không thể nhìn thấy, chạm thấy mà chỉ có thể cảm nhận được bằng trái tim mà thôi).

Thế nhưng đến thời điểm này, dường như đã bị "chìm xuồng", quả thực rất đáng tiếc. Trong khi đó, tại Mỹ, cái nôi của công nghệ thông tin và truyền thông, bây giờ người ta đang bắt đầu kiếm tiền nhờ công nghệ này.

Vấn đề chủ yếu:

- Bạn có ý tưởng xuất sắc, nhưng bạn vẫn không đủ tiềm lực kinh tế, chính trị để thương mại hóa ý tưởng của bạn, chí ít là trong một phạm vi hẹp (1 tỉnh, thành phố, hoặc quốc gia).

- Ngay cả khi tự mình không có đủ tiềm lực, bạn cũng không thể tìm được cách thức hợp tác, hoặc đối tác có tiềm lực hơn để hỗ trợ bạn trong việc thương mại hóa ý tưởng của bạn.

Bill Gates (Microsoft), Michael Dell (Dell Computer) hay Larry Ellison (Oracle)... đều là những người cực kỳ thành công. Theo phân tích của các chuyên gia, một người thành công đều thường hội tụ các yếu tố sau:

1. Khả năng tự lực cánh sinh: Một nhà kinh doanh giỏi là phải biết nhìn nhận mọi điều. Khi tìm thấy cơ hội có thể kiếm ra tiền, họ nhanh chóng chớp lấy và bắt tay ngay vào việc thực hiện nó.

2. Thích đối mặt với thử thách: Thử thách là sở thích của những nhà kinh doanh lớn. Họ muốn vượt qua tất cả giới hạn của sự không thể để "hút" toàn bộ thế giới vào tay. Họ coi thường sự sợ hãi và thiếu quyết đoán.

3. Không bao giờ khuất phục: Những người kinh doanh thật sự chẳng bao giờ từ bỏ bất kể công việc gì. Nếu thất bại, họ cũng vui vẻ bởi họ cho rằng, đó cũng chỉ là những thất bại tạm thời. Họ quay lại và tìm những con đường mới, đặt ra kế hoạch và thử lại lần nữa. Theo họ, "thành công chỉ đến sau những thất bại".

4. Kiên nhẫn theo đuổi ước mơ: Rủi ro là điều không thể tránh khỏi trong bất kỳ ngành kinh doanh nào. Nhà doanh nghiệp không bao giờ đứng chờ cuộc sống đổi thay, mà họ chủ động tự kiếm tìm thử thách và kiên nhẫn theo đuổi để thành công.

5. Sáng tạo: Năng động, sáng tạo là bản chất của họ. Sáng tạo ở đây được hiểu là khả năng nhìn ra một ngành kinh doanh mới, ngành mà chưa từng xuất hiện từ trước tới nay. Nói cách khác, khả năng quan sát đã tạo cho họ những cơ hội và những ý tưởng mới mang lại lợi nhuận.

6. Làm việc hết mình: Những doanh nghiệp giỏi là những người làm việc không ngừng nghỉ. Họ là người biết tính toán thời gian để hoàn thành công việc một cách hiệu quả.

7. Thoải mái và linh hoạt: Họ luôn linh hoạt trong cách giải quyết vấn đề. Chẳng hạn, nếu ở xa, họ có những người đại diện, họ cần những người quản lý để trợ giúp trong công việc kinh doanh…

8. Biết cạnh tranh: Trong thế giới kinh doanh, cạnh tranh là điều không thể tránh khỏi. Đó là một quy luật. Trong quy luật này, bạn vừa là người đi săn, vừa là con mồi. Do đó bạn phải "một sống một còn" với kẻ khác. Những nhà kinh doanh giỏi luôn muốn cạnh tranh với những người khác, muốn có đối thủ để đọ trí thông minh để vươn lên đứng ở vị trí số một.

9. Tự chủ: Ngay từ khi có ý tưởng, họ đã muốn làm việc cho chính mình. Điều đó xuất phát từ tham vọng của họ. Không muốn là một nhân viên và tự lực tạo cơ nghiệp để trở thành một ông chủ là tính cách của một nhà doanh nghiệp thành đạt.

10. Luôn luôn lạc quan: Các ông chủ thành công thường không bao giờ nghĩ đến thất bại. Trong họ chỉ có thành công và phát triển. Điều này có khó không? Không khó.
